A bold and troubling situation has emerged as Sherrone Moore, the former head coach of the University of Michigan football team, finds himself embroiled in serious legal troubles. On Thursday, his attorney expressed intentions to seek the dismissal of the criminal charges leveled against him, asserting that these allegations stem from "false and misleading statements."
After a brief court session at the 14A District Court in Ann Arbor, Ellen Michaels, representing Moore, spoke to the media about the case. She firmly stated that she believes in her client's innocence and has filed motions aimed at quashing the arrest warrant issued for him and dismissing the complaint altogether. A motion to quash indicates that the defense is challenging the legality of the arrest, suggesting that any evidence obtained as a result should not be admissible in court.
"This warrant was issued based on false and misleading statements presented as fact," Michaels asserted. "We are confident that the truth will come out during the court proceedings, where all parties will testify under oath."
Moore was terminated from his position on December 10 following an independent investigation by the university, which concluded he had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Allegations claim that after being dismissed, he went to the woman's home and made threats regarding his own life.
In December, the prosecutor's office in Washtenaw County charged Moore with serious offenses, including third-degree felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking, and breaking and entering. If he is convicted of home invasion, he could face up to five years in prison, marking this charge as the most severe among those brought against him. After initially being held on a $25,000 cash or surety bond at the Washtenaw County Jail, he was released mere hours after his arraignment.
During the December arraignment, Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski detailed the allegations, stating that Moore allegedly entered the home through an unlocked door without consent, engaging in a heated argument with the former staff member. In the course of this altercation, he reportedly brandished two butter knives and a pair of scissors, claiming he would harm himself.
Though Michaels did not disclose who she believes provided false or misleading information, she did mention during Thursday's hearing that the credibility of the "complaining witness" is crucial to the investigation. She emphasized the importance of evaluating various statements made by this individual, hinting at inconsistencies that could undermine their reliability. Additionally, she sought a Franks hearing, indicating a challenge to the accuracy of statements made by law enforcement officials that led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.
Dressed in a dark suit and black tie, Moore appeared before Judge J. Cedric Simpson for a probable cause conference, where he briefly introduced himself. Michaels informed the judge that she requires specific discovery materials, including phone and Title IX records, to effectively prepare for the case.
Rezmierski responded, explaining, "All evidence available in discovery has been provided to the defense, but the investigation is still ongoing." Michaels reiterated the necessity of obtaining certain documents from the university that relate to events preceding Moore's arrest, highlighting the potential relevance of prior statements made by the complaining witness to the overall case.
Moore refrained from making any comments to the press following the court hearing. The judge has scheduled a hearing for February 17 to address the discovery materials requested by the defense, with a subsequent probable cause conference set for March 19.
On the day of his arrest, Michigan's athletic director, Warde Manuel, terminated Moore's contract after determining through the university's investigation that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The termination letter accused Moore of dishonesty during the inquiry, which constituted a breach of his contract due to "fraud or dishonesty" in the performance of his job duties.
Kelli Moore, Sherrone's wife, was present in the courtroom on Thursday. Notably, she called 911 before his arrest out of concern for his safety, fearing he might harm himself. In a recorded emergency call, she conveyed to the dispatcher that Sherrone had informed her of his firing and was "in crisis," expressing uncertainty about his whereabouts at the time.
"He just told me he got fired and he's in crisis," Kelli said during the call. "I told him I love him and need him to come home, but I don’t know where he is; he said he was on a highway."
Sherrone Moore was appointed as the head football coach at the University of Michigan in January 2024, making history as the first Black head coach for the program and the youngest head coach in over fifty years at the age of 37. His recent firing and the ensuing criminal charges add yet another layer to the unfolding scandals surrounding the University of Michigan football program. This follows earlier controversies, including the suspension of former coach Jim Harbaugh for three games due to a sign-stealing investigation involving a former staff member, Connor Stalions, and the firing of former co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss related to a federal hacking case that implicated him in accessing the personal accounts of numerous college athletes to steal sensitive photographs and videos.
