Richard Torrez Jr. Destroys Tomas Salek in ONE Round! | Highlights & Analysis (2025)

Richard Torrez Jr. is back, and he's reminding everyone why he's a force to be reckoned with! After a rare trip to the judges' scorecards, Torrez delivered a swift and decisive victory, proving his knockout power is still very much alive. But sort of alive. Let's dig into the details, because there's more to this fight than meets the eye...

Eight months after going the distance for the first time in his professional career, the Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. (13-0, 11 KOs) returned to his winning ways with a first-round stoppage of Tomas Salek (23-8, 14 KOs) of the Czech Republic. The bout, which took place at the Arena Coliseo in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, as part of an ESPN Knockout/Top Rank Classics FAST channel preliminary card on Saturday evening, lasted just 2 minutes and 45 seconds. This marks Torrez's quickest victory in nearly two years, a welcome return to form for the promising heavyweight.

From the opening bell, the fight was dominated by Torrez. Salek, making his first appearance outside of Europe, struggled to mount any meaningful offense. In fact, some commentators considered this fight a potential mismatch from the start. But here's where it gets controversial... Did the mismatch make the fight less exciting, or did it serve as a showcase for Torrez's skills? It's a question worth pondering.

Torrez, a 26-year-old southpaw from Tulare, California, remained composed and focused, even as his powerful punches landed with increasing frequency. He didn't underestimate his opponent, a sign of his maturity as a fighter. A sweeping right hook proved to be the decisive blow, opening a cut on Salek's nose and prompting the referee to call time. The ringside physician examined Salek, whose audible reactions of pain – "Ow, ow, ow" – suggested he was in no condition to continue. The fight was subsequently stopped, awarding Torrez the TKO victory.

For Salek, this defeat marks his third in the last four fights, a disappointing outcome for his first venture outside of the European boxing circuit. On the other hand, Torrez secured his first stoppage win since December 7th of last year and his fastest since December 2023 when he dispatched Donald Haynesworth in just 139 seconds. And this is the part most people miss... This victory is about more than just a win; it's about momentum and building confidence for future challenges. It's a clear statement that Torrez is back on track after his previous fight went the distance.

This fight followed Torrez's unanimous decision victory over Guido Vianello in Las Vegas on April 5th, a bout that went the full 10 rounds. The early ending of the Torrez-Salek fight provided unexpected airtime for another rising star, Julian Montalvo. Originally slated for a highlights package, Montalvo seized the opportunity to showcase his skills live.

The 17-year-old from Las Vegas didn't waste any time, securing a first-round knockout of Nicolas Patron (3-3, 1 KO) in their junior lightweight contest. Two knockdowns were all it took for Montalvo (5-0, 4 KOs) to secure the win, stopping Patron at 2 minutes and 2 seconds of the opening round. Montalvo quickly dropped Patron with a right hand followed by a left hook. Patron bravely rose to his feet but was immediately sent back to the canvas by a left hook to the body. The referee reached the full ten count, awarding Montalvo his fifth professional victory since turning pro in March.

Earlier in the evening, Jorge Ascanio (15-1-1, 9 KOs) of San Luis Postol earned his fourth victory of the year with a 10-round split decision win over previously undefeated Jose Amaro (14-1-1, 7 KOs). One judge scored the bout 95-94 in favor of Amaro, from Mazatlan, Mexico, but the other two judges overruled with scores of 95-94 and 96-93 for Ascanio, extending his winning streak to eight fights.

All three bouts served as supporting fights for the main event, the WBO featherweight title fight between Rafael Espinoza and Arnold Khegai.

So, what do you think? Was the stoppage justified, or was it too soon? Does this victory solidify Torrez as a top heavyweight prospect? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
