Benny Elias on Benji Marshall's Extension: NRL News 2025 | Wests Tigers Drama (2026)

Benny Elias, a Balmain legend, questions the Wests Tigers’ move to extend Benji Marshall’s tenure to 2030, while the club’s boardroom turmoil continues to simmer. Elias says his long-held ambition to chair the Tigers could be sidelined after the latest upheavals, which saw the reinstatement of directors and a shift in leadership following Barry O’Farrell’s return.

Elias floated as a potential replacement for O’Farrell during the upheaval, along with three others, but the NRL’s intervention has halted any immediate reboot. In the wake of the boardroom shake-up, former CEO Shane Richardson has been excluded, and Shaun Mielekamp has been appointed as interim chief executive.

Despite the board drama, Elias spoke to Wide World of Sports about how he would have approached the chairman’s role—beginning with a comprehensive, bottom-up interview process that includes everyone from ball boys to players, staff, and administrators. He emphasized understanding what matters to people across the club, including the NRLW division, as part of building stronger on-field performances.

The 234-game Tigers veteran, who played for the club from 1982 to 1994, described himself as an optimist who hopes the recent events lead to harmony and more wins. Yet he argued real on-field improvement requires meaningful change off the field. The Tigers confirmed Marshall will remain head coach for another five years, tying him to Concord through 2030, a decision Elias met with surprise.

Shaun Mielekamp’s interim appointment followed his arrival in early 2024 after a lengthy spell as Central Coast Mariners CEO. The Marshall extension reportedly came amid tensions within the squad, with murmurs that Brad Arthur might be considered for a coaching return if Marshall faltered next season.

Elias warned that if he’d joined the board, he would have done substantial homework before approving any extension. He suggested a cautious, evidence-based approach: interviewing the entire organization, weighing player and staff perspectives, and evaluating all administrative aspects before committing to a multi-year deal. He stressed that this would be among the club’s most consequential decisions in decades.

Paradoxically, Marshall could emerge as the biggest beneficiary of the board turmoil, as the uncertainty around leadership spreads through the squad that remains loyal to him. Elias acknowledged the potential for a mass player exodus to undermine Marshall’s position but remains confident in the team’s talent pool and its capability to finish in the top four.

Elias pointed out that last season’s 13th-place finish out of 17 teams wasn’t acceptable in his view. He argued the Tigers must do more than tweak tactics; they need a holistic approach that improves both the football operation and the organizational structure at the top. In his analogy, the club’s “balance sheet” isn’t just about profits or losses but ladder position, and turning red ink into black requires a different strategy on and off the field.

Ultimately, Elias tied the solution to leadership at the very top—the coach and the boardroom—insisting that lasting improvement hinges on structural changes as much as on-field performance.
