BAFTA Longlisted Short Film 'Nostalgie' - Aidan Gillen Stars in Belfast-Based Drama (2026)

A Touch of Nostalgia: Belfast Short Film Earns Bafta Longlist Recognition

A captivating short film from Belfast has made waves by being longlisted for a prestigious Bafta award, and it has everyone buzzing with excitement. Directed by Kathryn Ferguson, Nostalgie features the talented Aidan Gillen in a compelling narrative about a once-famous pop star from England who is invited to perform in Northern Ireland.

In his quest to relive his past successes, he soon discovers a chilling truth tied to one of his songs that transforms everything he thought he knew. This poignant tale draws inspiration from a short story penned by Wendy Erskine, a celebrated author from Belfast.

The longlisting for a Bafta is a significant milestone in the awards process, serving as the initial round of voting before the selection of final nominees and winners.

During an interview on BBC Radio Ulster's show, The Ticket, Ferguson shared her surprise at receiving the longlist honor, stating, "We were a little stunned... we genuinely didn't expect it at all." She recounted how she stumbled upon Erskine's story after completing her feature documentary, Nothing Compares, which chronicles the life of the Irish artist Sinéad O'Connor.

Upon reading Erskine's collection titled Dance Move, it was Nostalgie that particularly resonated with her. "I think it was how cinematic it was," Ferguson reflected. Her recent experience with O'Connor prompted her to ponder the dynamics of artistic autonomy—specifically, what happens to an artist's work when it enters the public domain and falls into the hands of others, often losing the original creator's control.

Erskine also expressed her enthusiasm about collaborating with Ferguson and screenwriter Stacey Gregg, saying, "It was great to hand over my work to them. Often, people approach me with lofty ideas about adapting my stories, but I tend to remain skeptical about whether those projects will materialize. However, meeting Stacey and Kathryn felt different; they are both exceptionally talented and inspired confidence in me."

So, what exactly is Nostalgie about?

Starring Aidan Gillen, the film features original compositions by Dan Smith, the lead singer of the band Bastille. In the story, Gillen portrays Drew Lord Haig, who is invited to perform at a centenary celebration for a battalion in Belfast, hoping to reclaim his former glory. After delivering one of his hit singles, he finds the audience unresponsive. Yet, when he plays his long-neglected B-side track, Nostalgie de la Boue, the crowd erupts in enthusiasm.

As the plot unfolds, Drew learns that the battalion had adopted his song during the Troubles, turning it into a rallying cry that held significant meaning for them.

When it came to creating the film's music, Ferguson mentioned there was considerable collaboration, stating, "There was a lot of back and forth involved. Dan would send me lyrics and demos while on tour with Bastille, often writing in the back of his tour van. We aimed to ensure that the song felt authentically like a hit from 1986, complete with a catchy hook—a true anthem that could resonate with audiences."

This intriguing blend of personal history, artistry, and cultural significance opens up avenues for discussion. Does the ownership of art change once it's released to the public? Can we truly reclaim our narratives after sharing them with the world? What are your thoughts on the implications of this film and its themes? Share your perspectives in the comments!
